Wherever you are, start there …
Life I feel is a continuous set of ‘starts’ and ‘stops’ but never in the same proportion nor fixed order. Whilst one ‘start’ may result in a ‘stop’ and vice versa, it is not always a guarantee that every ‘stop’ is linked to a ‘start’, nor is every ‘start’ linked to a ‘stop’. Some ‘stops’ are permanent and so are ‘starts’, we stay in process, whilst some are just for a little while, not forever. I am at a ‘start’. The start of something potentially inexplicable but in a positive light. My life has made a complete change of course from going South, now its headed North.
It all happened so fast that I haven’t had time to catch my breath and finally, as I am giving myself a chance to breathe and take it all in, new questions bombard my psyche and I am not surprised. I have always been one to question anything not understood and at times even what I did understand, but just to make sure that my understanding was valid.
This is a very crucial ‘start’ because it essentially paves the way to what the greater part of my future will be and part of me is nervous. And it is alright to be nervous, it is alright to feel this way. I have to continuously remind myself that these same feelings of confusion and uncertainty are good because, not only do they remind me of my humanity, but they can be the source of the internal fuel I shall require to initiate this ‘start’ as well as keep it from stopping prematurely, if at all.
I have been called upon to lead! But one who leads has to have certain qualities and surely they must have seen some in their process of choosing me. But the process that led to this place is not as important as what I do from here on end. I believe most things, if not anything, can be learned. So here I am seeking to find what makes people such as Gandhi, Dr King, Mandela and Madame Thatcher to mention just a few from my Mastermind, such great icons. What sets apart Steve Jobs or Marie Curie from the average Jane? What will set me apart from the next human being striving for the same goals I am?
One of my favourite lecturer’s whilst in college once said something profound to me over our chat concerning my future during my honours year. He told me that whatever idea that I had, trust that I was part of at least 100 other people whose mind it had crossed too, and I had to find something more that would set me apart from the other 99. So what is it that sets our great leaders apart from the rest?
At some point in time before this particular beginning, I thought I had it figured out, but the more I get exposed to the rest of the world, I realize I still have a lot more learning to do. So here it is, this period’s ‘Start’…well, more of ‘Starting over’, because I have to un-learn and relearn a whole new set of facts and truths concerning life, love and leadership. As one of my role models once said and I quote,
“Let the children grow, some taller than others if it within them to do so!” [Margaret Thatcher].
